Tariq Mahmood SaggalManaging Director Environmental Management Systems - ISO 14001Although environmental standardization is far from being a new venture for ISO, the 14000 series of standards focusing on environmental management is a relative newcomer to ISO's portfolio. The ISO organization utilizes a two-pronged approach to environmental management. This first is an emphasis on specific environmental sampling, testing, and analytical methods. The second is a strategic approach to environmental management through systems. The group responsible for writing the 14000 series has worked closely with the group authoring the quality series and much of the formatting changes in the latest version of ISO 9000 are to aid in alignment of the two.The premise of ISO 14001 involves the establishment of an environmental policy, objectives, and targets and implementing programs to achieve those objectives. A key element in the standard involves investigating the environmental aspects of the organizations activities, products and services. An aspect is considered as any effect on the environment including the air, water, land, or humans. Although the standard is not compliance focused, it does have an element that evaluates how the organization assures its compliance to relevant regulations and laws. The standard also addresses the manner in which an organization communicates externally and internally on environmental matters, as well as the implementation of internal audits for maintenance of the system, and the monitoring and measuring of the environmental performance of its activities, products and services. In short, ISO 14001 challenges an organization to go beyond the bare minimum of compliance to focus on areas where their business can impact the environment. Effective implementation of this type of system can lead to reduced cost of waste management, savings in energy and materials consumption, improved corporate image, and a framework for continuous improvement.
